| Fish
Oil (EPA/DHA) Essential Fatty Acids |
Fish
Oil contains vital EPA/DHA Omega-3 essential fatty acids that help
maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels and promote
heart (cardiovascular system) and joint health. Consumption of Omega-3
fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. FDA evaluated
the data and determined that although there is scientific evidence
supporting the claim, the evidence is not conclusive.

Olive
Oil Polyphenols
|
The
health and therapeutic benefits of olive oil were first mentioned
by Hippocrates, the father of medicine. For centuries, the nutritional,
cosmetic and medicinal benefits of olive oil have been recognized
by the people of the Mediterranean. Olive Oil was used to maintain
skin and muscle suppleness, heal abrasions and soothe the burning
and drying effects of sun and water. Olive Oil was administered
both internally and externally – for health and beauty. Olive
oil consumption is one of the important factors behind the health
benefits of the "Mediterranean Diet." Recent research
has now provided firm proof that a Mediterranean diet, which includes
olive oil, is not only generally healthy, but that consuming olive
oil can actually help with harmful LDL cholesterol and promote healthy
cardiovascular and immune health.

Prostate |
Selenium |
Selenium is an essential antioxidant trace mineral that helps protect
cells from free radical damage. Selenium activates an antioxidant
enzyme called glutathione peroxidase, which may help protect the
body from many malignant conditions. Selenium promotes heart and
prostate health and is an important immune system booster. Selenium
is an important trace mineral, necessary to the body for good health.
|
|
| Zinc |
This mineral boosts the body’s natural defense system, especially
during the cold season. Zinc also promotes a healthy prostate and
is important for healthy skin, nails, and hair.
|
| Lycopene |
Lycopene is an important member of the carotenoid family (a group
of naturally occurring pigments found in fruits and vegetables).
Lycopene is an antioxidant nutrient that gives tomatoes their rich
red color. Lycopene supports healthy prostate and urinary tract
function, and it may help make nighttime more comfortable for men
bothered by frequent trips to the bathroom. It is one of the most
talked about men’s nutrients among the scientific community and
the press.
|
| Vitamin
D |
Vitamin D is necessary for proper utilization of calcium and phosphorus.
Vitamin D is essential for bone growth and maintenance of bone density.
A dietary deficiency of Vitamin D inhibits production of the protein
that binds calcium in the intestines. In this instance, calcium
cannot be absorbed, even if there is adequate intake. Deficiencies
of vitamin D are often found in the elderly and in women who have
low intake of milk and/or receive inadequate exposure to sunlight.
New research indicates that modern, indoor lifestyles may lead to
a widespread increase in Vitamin D deficiency. Scientists are discovering
that Vitamin D is an important hormone precursor that supports immune
response and helps regulate the health of at least 20 different
tissues, including those found in the nervous system and joints.
It also plays an important role in regulating cell growth, insulin
levels and bone formation. Based on this research, scientists recommend
that individuals should consider a vitamin supplement to raise their
intake to 1,000 IU's per day, adding that it is well within the
safety guidelines established by the FDA.
Caution: Large doses of Vitamin D (1400-2000 IU/day) may
cause hypercalcemia (an excessive amount of calcium in the blood)
and/or nephrocalcinosis ( a disorder involving deposits of calcium,
oxalate or phosphate in the renal tubules), conditions that can
cause a decrease in renal function. Monthly blood tests to monitor
serum calcium and parathyroid hormone levels should be done to protect
against vitamin D3 toxicity. Those with underlying kidney disease
should avoid high doses of vitamin D3. Although some research indicates
that dosages up to 10,000 IU/day are safe, healthy people should
stay below 2,000 IU/day.

| Vitamin
E |
Vitamin E has been getting a lot of attention in recent years, thanks
to the valuable nutritional support it provides for a strong heart
and cardiovascular system, but it’s more than just a heart-health
vitamin. Vitamin E’s antioxidant properties help protect vital tissues
throughout the body against the ravages of free radicals.
|
| Phytosterols |
Phytosterols (phytostanols and beta-sitosterols) are plant derived
compounds, similar in structure to cholesterol. Typical dietary
intake of Phytosterols is 100 mg. to 300 mg., higher in vegetarians.
Beta-Sitosterol is the most abundant phytosterol in the diet. Beta-Sitosterol
is widely found in Saw Palmetto, pumpkin seed, and pygeum. These
three botanicals are used in the herbal management of benign prostatic
hypertrophy (BPH). Beta-Sitosterol is used as a prescriptive medicine
in Europe.
A review of 4 double-blind placebo controlled studies tested the
efficacy of beta-sitosterol in men with benign prostatic hypertrophy
(BPH). These studies concluded that phytosterols significantly improved
urological symptoms and flow measure in those subjects.
|
| Saw
Palmetto Extract |
Saw palmetto (sometimes referred to as sabal in Europe) is native
to the southeastern United States; the berries of this plant are
used medicinally. Saw Palmetto helps promote healthy urinary frequency
and flow, allowing men to enjoy enhanced comfort and rest throughout
the night. Saw Palmetto also helps support a healthy inflammatory
response in the prostate.
|
| Nettle |
Nettle (also known as stinging nettle) is indigenous to North America.
Nettle is widely used in the treatment of BPH (or prostate enlargement)
in Europe. Nettle Root appears to reduce the obstruction to urinary
flow and decrease the need for nighttime urination.
In clinical trials, Nettle Root was shown to provide significant
improvement in prostate size, nighttime urination, urination frequency
and urine flow. A double blind clinical trial showed a 14% improvement
in urine flow and a 53% decrease in residual urine. Nettle Leaf
has not been shown to be being very beneficial for BPH, only Nettle
Root has proved to work in reducing BPH symptoms.
|
| Pygeum |
Pygeum (bark) is a tall evergreen, native to central and South Africa.
Pygeum is used in France, Italy, and Germany to treat BPH (benign
prostatic hyperplasia).
Pygeum has been studied in numerous clinical trials and has been
shown to provide significant improvements in residual urine flow,
voided volume, urinary flow, nighttime urination, and day time frequency.
Pygeum is thought to reduce the inflammation in the prostate by
inhibiting prostate growth factors - substances that are implicated
in prostate enlargement.
Pygeum is primarily used in the treatment of BPH, but there is some
evidence that Pygeum is also beneficial in treating prostatis, impotence,
and male infertility.
|
| Pumpkin
Seed Extract |
Pumpkin Seed Extract (Pumpkins seeds) are native to North and Central
America. Pumpkin seeds contain several major active constituents:
essential fatty acids, amino acids, phytosterols (including beta-sitosterol),
minerals, and vitamins. Pumpkin seed extract has been used for a
variety of medical treatments including urinary tract problems,
gastritis, and the treatment of intestinal disorders. Clinical studies
have shown that pumpkin seed extract improves the function of the
bladder and urethra. This may account for BPH symptom relief.
|
| Pomegranate
Extract |
The pomegranate’s yellowish-pink, seedy fruit has been a staple
of Asian diets since ancient times. In ancient Greek myth, the pomegranate
represents life and regeneration. Its herbal use dates back more
than 3,000 years, but contemporary science has rediscovered the
pomegranate’s effectiveness in preventing a variety of potentially
deadly diseases. Dozens of recent studies reveal pomegranate’s surprising
array of benefits. Pomegranates contain powerful antioxidants that
promote heart and blood pressure health. In addition, pomegranate
extract has demonstrated strong immune-benefiting properties. Pomegranate
has also been shown to be effective in helping to alleviate mood
issues associated with menopause. One of the active constituents
in pomegranate extract is Ellagic acid. Ellagic acid is a detoxifying
agent and has demonstrated DNA-protecting properties, including
the ability to bind to and neutralize toxins.

| Beta
Carotene |
Beta
Carotene, known as provitamin A, belongs to a group of chemicals
known as carotenoids. Carotenes are highly pigmented (red, orange,
yellow), fat-soluble compounds, naturally present in many fruits,
grains, oils and vegetables (green plants, carrots, sweet potatoes,
spinach, etc.), and possess significant antioxidant properties.
Beta Carotene, when mixed with other carotenoids, has been shown
to be beneficial in protecting against cancer and heart disease,
boosting one's immune system, slowing the progression of cataracts
and other related eye disorders, and may decrease the progression
of degenerative arthritis. Vitamin A deficiency may lead to abnormal
bone development and disorders of the eye and reproductive system.

| Vitamin
C |
Vitamin
C (as Calcium Ascorbate) is an essential nutrient for humans and
the most important water-soluble, biological antioxidant. Good sources
of Vitamin C include most fruits and vegetables. Deficiency of Vitamin
C (Scurvy) may result in slow wound healing, easy bruising, shortness
of breath, fatigue, poor collagen repair/maintenance, infertility
and other medical conditions. Vitamin C has many suspected benefits,
which include: antioxidant activity, cardiovascular protection,
lowering blood pressure, antiviral, allergic and immune support,
and enhanced absorption of Iron. Vitamin C may help reduce the severity
and duration of colds and flus, in addition to other respiratory
infections. There is some evidence that Vitamin C may hasten recovery
when treating patients with pneumonia and bronchitis. Recommended
daily allowance (RDA) is 75mg to 90mg a day for adults, but higher
dietary intake is under review. It is common practice to supplement
at 250mg to 1000mg a day. To promote digestive tolerance, Vitamin
C supplementation should be taken with food.
|
| Vitamin
E |
Vitamin
E has been getting a lot of attention in recent years, thanks to
the valuable nutritional support it provides for a strong heart
and cardiovascular system, but it’s more than just a heart-health
vitamin. Vitamin E’s antioxidant properties help protect vital tissues
throughout the body against the ravages of free radicals.
|
| Thiamin |
Thiamin
(Vitamin B-1 as Thiamin HCL) is a water-soluble vitamin. Dietary
sources of Thiamin include beef, brewer's yeast, legumes, milk,
oats, oranges, pork, rice, seeds, wheat, whole grains and cereals.
Thiamin deficiency occurs in people with alcoholism, malnutrition,
mal-absorption syndromes, acute infections, Folate deficiency and
major catabolic and physiologic stress states. Lack of Thiamin is
associated with negative cognitive and emotional changes, whereas
severe chronic deficiency (Beriberi) can result in serious complications
of the brain and nervous system, muscles, heart and gastrointestinal
tract.
|
| Riboflavin |
Riboflavin
(Vitamin B-2) is an essential nutrient for human nutrition and plays
an important role in the production of energy. Dietary sources of
Riboflavin include milk, eggs, cereals, meats, liver, and green
vegetables. Deficiency of Riboflavin may result in weakness and
fatigue, mouth and tongue sores/cracking, dermatitis and anemia.
Riboflavin has been shown to be effective in the prophylaxis of
migraine headaches and may be active against esophageal cancer,
in addition to cardiovascular and anti-malarial protection.
|
| Niacin
|
Also
known as Vitamin B-3, Niacin supports healthy cholesterol levels
and promotes energy through the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates
and proteins. Because B vitamins are water-soluble, the body releases
what it does not use through urine or perspiration Thus, it is extremely
important to replenish the supply. "Regular" Niacin can
cause an effect called "flushing," which can turn your
face and neck red and warm. Flush-free Niacin provides all the benefits
of "regular" Niacin without the associated discomforts.
|
| Vitamin
B-6 |
Vitamin
B-6 (as Pyridoxine HCL) is a water soluble vitamin that plays a
significant role in the production of proteins, hormones, and neurotransmitters.
It is required by your body to derive energy from the foods you
eat, production of red blood cells and proper functioning of nerves.
Evidence supports that supplementation of Vitamin B-6 can help prevent
heart disease by reducing blood levels of homocysteine, a chemical
that is linked to hardening of the arteries, lowering blood pressure,
and decreasing the tendency of platelets in the blood to form clots.
Dietary deficiency of Vitamin B-6 has been implicated in neuropathic
pain disorders (particularly diabetic peripheral neuropathy) and
may result from the use of certain prescription medications called
MAO inhibitors (Hydralazine, Penicillamine, Theophylline, and Isoniazid).
|
| Folate |
Folate (Folic Acid) is an essential B-Vitamin, necessary in several
key biological processes including the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and
proteins that help the body make new, healthy cells. Foods containing
Folic Acid include green leafy vegetables, fruits, dried beans,
peas, nuts, enriched breads and cereals, and other grain products.
Folate supplementation by pregnant women reduces the risk of having
children with birth defects from neural tube disorders by 50 to
80%. Folate supplementation, along with Vitamin B-6 and Vitamin
B-12, effectively reduces blood levels of homocysteine, which in
turn reduces a patient's risk of heart disease and stroke. Elevated
homocysteine levels may double the risk of coronary heart disease.
Interestingly, studies suggest that a deficiency in Folate predisposes
individuals to develop cancer of the cervix, lung, colon, breast,
and mouth.
|
| Vitamin
B-12 |
Vitamin
B-12, like other B-Vitamins, is an essential nutrient. It is important
for healthy metabolism, proper functioning of red blood cells and
in maintaining normal nerve cell activity. Vitamin B-12 is found
in eggs, meat, poultry, shellfish and milk products. Mild B-12 deficiency
can cause anemia, numbness in the arms and legs, weakness and loss
of balance. Neurotoxicity, memory loss and dementia can occur with
more severe depletion. Strict vegetarians, those who have had surgery
on their stomachs and/or specific parts of the small intestine (ileum),
patients with Crohns disease, colitis, tape worm and pernicious
anemia, are at heightened risk for B-12 deficiency. Vitamin B-12
is the treatment of choice in patients with pernicious anemia and
may help individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome, HIV, some forms
of cancer and vascular diseases.
|
| Pantothenic
Acid |
Pantothenic
Acid (Vitamin B-5) is a member of the B-Vitamin family and is an
essential nutrient for human nutrition and growth. It is found in
eggs, milk, fish, legumes, and cereals. Pantothenic Acid is involved
in a number of biological reactions including healthy metabolism.
Several studies have shown that Pantothenic Acid helps lower elevated
levels of triglycerides.
|
| Coenzyme
Q-10 |
Also
known as ubiquinone, Coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ10) is a powerful antioxidant
and a natural substance found in every cell in the body. It plays
a fundamental role in the mitochondria, the parts of the cell that
produce energy from food. CoQ10 is essential for energy production
in the body’s cells, especially the heart, which has extraordinary
energy requirements. Levels of CoQ10 drop with age and are lower
in people with heart disease. In fact, the more severe the heart
disease, the lower the CoQ10 levels are thought to be. Moreover,
some commonly prescribed medications, such as the Statin drugs,
prescribed for high cholesterol and beta-blockers such as Propranalol
for high blood pressure and angina, may reduce blood levels of CoQ10
in the body as well, making supplementation with CoQ10 even more
essential.
|
| Alpha
Lipoic Acid |
Alpha
Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a fatty acid found naturally in the body and
helps convert the food we eat into energy. It is a vitamin-like
antioxidant sometimes referred to as the “universal antioxidant”
because it is soluble in both fat and water and is capable of regenerating
several antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, E, and Coenzyme Q10. Alpha
Lipoic Acid has been shown in scientific studies to have a variety
of benefits for those with type 2 diabetes.
|
| Blueberry |
When
researchers analyzed fruits and vegetables for their antioxidant
capability, blueberries came out on top, rating highest in their
capacity to destroy free radicals. Most recently, scientists have
discovered mechanisms to explain how blueberries can promote memory
and restore healthy neuronal function to aged brains. Blueberries
also help maintain healthy blood flow.

Probiotic+ |
Lactobacillus
|
Lactobacillus acidophilus is the most widely used probiotic. This healthy bacteria inhabits the intestines and vagina and protects against the entrance of harmful organisms. The breakdown of food by L. acidophilus produces lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and other byproducts that make it difficult for undesired organisms to proliferate. L. acidophilus also produces lactase which helps break down milk sugar (lactose) to aid in digestion. This can be beneficial to patients with lactose intolerence. L. acidophilus has also been thought to improve gastrointestinal function, improve immunity and decrease vaginal yeast infections. Dietary sources include milk enriched with acidophilus, yogurt, miso, and tempeh. Preparations range from dried capsules, powders, and granules to liquid forms which must remain refridgerated. Recommended doses vary depending on the disease process being treated. Lactobacillus plantarium helps individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Diarrheal Syndromes, and possibly Colitis. It too has shown to benefit ones' immune system and aid in maintaining normal microflora of the intestines.
|
|
| Bifidobacterium |
This bacteria helps maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora which promotes good digestion. These bacteria also inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi which may have more pathogenic qualities. Bifidobacterium longum promotes good digestion and boosts immunity. It produces lactic acid and acetic acid instead of gas (like E. coli) which helps decrease intestinal distress. Bifidobacterium breve may be beneficial in the overall treatment of patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and others with diarrheal illnesses. Bifidobacterium bacteria have also been used to reduce symptoms related to antibiotic associated diarrhea. Additional proposed uses of probiotics include prevention of urinary tract infections, asthma and allergies.

| L-Theanine |
L-Theanine is a unique amino acid found in Green Tea that has been extensively researched and shown to promote relaxation. It works by enhancing endocrine function, stimulating specific brain waves without inhibiting others.
|
| L-Taurine |
Taurine
is a conditionally essential amino acid produced from cysteine by
the body. In particular, it is found abundantly throughout the excitable
tissues of the central nervous system, where it is thought to have
a regulating influence. However, Taurine is deficient in many diets
and may not be sufficiently produced by the body in certain disease
states. Taurine helps maintain the body's electrolyte balance and
promotes cardiovascular health and gastrointestinal function. It
is known to play an important role in numerous physiological functions.
|
| Scullcap |
Scullcap is considered the best general tonic of all the nervine herbs. Scullcap helps fight the effects of nervous tension and is found in many nighttime supplements to promote a peaceful night's sleep.
|
| Hops |
The relaxing properties of Hops are known to all - think about sipping a beer after a hard day of work. This herb is the non-alcoholic means to the same tranquil end. Hops are effective when taken alone, but when combined with other herbs like Valerian, Chamomile and Passion Flower, it tends to heighten the benefit.
|
| Passion Flower |
Passion
Flower is a climbing vine, renowned for its beautiful white flowers
with purple, blue or pink calyx crown blooms. The historical use
of Passion Flower is similar to its current use as a mild sedative.
Medicinal use of the herb did not begin until the late 19th century
in the United States. Passion Flower was used to treat nervous restlessness
and gastrointestinal spasms. Passion Flower has a long tradition
of use for its mildly sedative properties and has been approved
in Germany as an over-the-counter drug for states of nervous unrest.
For optimal benefit, Passion Flower is very often combined with
other calmatives, including Chamomile, Scullcap, and Valerian.
